Argentine Tango: Beginner Series

Prerequisite: NONE!
No partner required!

Learn to dance the Argentine Tango beautifully and comfortably. We emphasize proper technique, musicality, and a solid connection with your partner. We break down every move into its component elements to help you dance tango with ease and style. We discuss the etiquette and culture of tango to prepare you for social dances at our monthly milonga. This class is for absolute beginners and for anybody wishing to review the fundamentals of tango.

Argentine tango is danced in a spectrum of personal styles, in a range of embraces from close (with the couple joined at the upper torso during the dance) to open (where the couple's torsos are not attached). Choosing a style and embrace at any given moment is a matter of personal preference. When floor space is ample, a couple can dance open-embrace while still maintaining respect for the floor and the couples around them; as the floor gets more crowded, more couples will dance in a close-embrace.

Upon completion of this series, students often re-take the Beginner Series to refine their dance and/or take the Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Series.

Comfortable shoes that won't fall off (no flip-flops) and won't grip the floor (no running shoes) are recommended.

Students are encouraged to stay after the lesson and dance during the FREE supervised practica. The practica is a good opportunity to meet more advanced dancers, work on your dance skills, and get help from/give help to others.

Argentine Tango: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Series

Prerequisite: Beginner series or permission of instructor.
No partner required!

We will build on the foundations taught in the beginner series. We will introduce more challenging elements and concepts (e.g. salidas, turns, ocho cortados), always emphasizing the connection between the leader and the follower, musicality, proper technique, and navigation. We will practice reassembling the new and old pieces of tango vocabulary into new improvised combinations for the social dance floor. Throughout, leaders and followers will be encouraged to be active and equal participants in the creation of the dance.

Upon completion of this series, students often re-take the Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Series (there is a lot of advanced beginner material!). (For some good information on shoes, etiquette, music, history, etc., here is a nice Beginner's Guide.)

Students are encouraged to stay after the lesson and dance during the FREE supervised practica. The practica is a good opportunity to work on your dance skills and get help from/give help to others.
